Nobody likes having their inconsistently applied beliefs pointed out. A person might believe in the power of prayer, but if someone gets sick and needs a new liver, they're most likely going to go to the hospital and get on the transplant list. Why do that instead of praying to God to heal you? Hmmmm. Now you can argue that God expects you to do everything to help yourself, including taking advantage of medical technology. But that still makes prayer rather superfluous to the process, unless the sole function of prayer is to make the person praying feel better, and not because they expect it to yield any heavenly results.
