That ep has Moffat's mitts all over it. I am like 95% sure that Moffat, a Sherlock fan since he was little, and someone with an utter repeated fascination with domme type women (who fall for the mouthy bad boy hero), had a specific idea about Irene when he directed that episode to be written.

I've also been a Sherlock fan since I was little (and a Moffat fan - LOVED Press Gang), and I never had a problem with the hundred year old material about Irene. It's the way it's been "modernised" that I find really gross.
