Notes:
Last day to submit for next week!
Happy Valentines Day to everyone! ♥♥♥
Also, just a note: Dude, bitmaps are HUGE. Please don't submit secrets in bitmap format. I redid one today to a jpeg, because I was feeling nice, but we will make a special section down in the not posted secrets in the future for bitmaps. We're trying to make the page as easy to load for everyone as we can. Thanks!
Secrets Left to Post: 4 pages, 81 secrets from Secret Submission Post #058.

I think the Japanese voice actors have a huge advantage though, in that they act against each other in the studio when they're recording. It makes the scenes more alive, I think.
Also, people in northern Europe generally have a bias against dubbing, as it's only done in shows for really small children (to small to read, or read fast enough for subtitles) here. Not to mention that it's almost always incredibly badly done.

Yeah, I'd agree with you there. That process is just way too difficult for other dub actors though, since the final animation can't be altered to suit their reads. =/

That's Kodomo no omocha, right? I've only watched up to episode twenty... nine, I think? it was a really old fansub, and about six or eight years ago. I can't say that I remember hating antbody's voice actually, I think the Goku thing is that I just think it clashed horribly with what I percieved his personality to be like from reading the manga.

That's why I wonder why a dub is even necessary. Unless it's aimed at very young children, of course. But I admit that my cultural bias against dubbing is pretty strong. XD

Haha, I prefer dubs because I like devoting all my time to the visual aspect of a series. I can read fast enough, but there are some shows (like Ouran Host Club, for example) that are so gorgeous that I can't catch every detail, and it makes me sad. =/ There's only one thing I haven't been able to divide my attention well enough to watched subbed, and that's Advent Children. Mostly that was just because I couldn't pry my attention away from the pretty. When I saw the dub, though, I realized that I wasn't missing anything, anyway. XD
I'm a voice actor, though, so I'm a little biased towards dubs. XD

I become annoyed when I watch shows in my own language instead, since I have to concentrate so much on deciphering what they're saying instead of on the plot. Some actors are terrible with mumbling, whispering, and the like. Having subtitles is very convenient that way, and lots of people put on the subs even on Swedish shows, just to be able to relax when watching. XD
...but seriously, AC in American dub? I just couldn't bear watching it without Sakurai Takahiro. I think I'm a little bit in love with his voice, heh.
Not that I begrudge Americans their dubs, of course. Most fans in other countries won't watch it though, since why watch a dub in another foreign language? This lead to some annoying problems in Yu-Gi-Oh! for example - half the time I didn't know which characters some fans were talking about, as they changed the names in the American dub.
I'm just as vehement when watching American animation; I want the original, not the dub. It may be good (though in Sweden that's incredibly rare), but it still sounds vaguely... wrong? I mean, Spiderman speaking Swedish? The mind boggles. XD
(Reposted because of html-fail, sorry)

Yeah, I love Paprika a little *too* much...I've never actually seen any Swedish dubs, but I know some dubs in other languages are just terrible with mumbling, including English. XDD What's even worse is that whether or not you can expect a good dub relies solely on what production company is distributing it. For example, 4Kids (New York company) is the one that butchers everything, whereas FUNimation (in Texas) and Geneon (in California) are more known for better quality, uncut product. The better companies are where you find the better-spoken actors, who actually know how to *talk* and not *mutter* a line. Muttering =/= acting. *Stares at A-list movie actors*
Haha, I admit that the Advent Children dub was painfully mediocre. I admit that a lot of dubs are as such, but it's always awesome when you find some gems, or even when the terrible dub suits the show for hilarity's sake (like in Gravitation). I'm absolutely smitten with Takahiro Sakurai, too. Have you seen Kyo Kara Maoh? He's hilarious in that.
half the time I didn't know which characters some fans were talking about, as they changed the names in the American dub.
Oh yeah, thankfully that happens less as fans get more persistent about uncut products. The only company that changes names anymore is the one distributor in New York. I really want to punch that company in the face, because I really want to see an uncut YuGiOh series but can only do so by purchasing bootlegs. =/
I'm not too big about watching the original--I just like seeing the different approaches to characters. The American Gojyo came off differently than the Japanese Gojyo, Takahiro Sakurai was more pouty as Haseo than Yuri Lowenthal, etc. etc. It's cool to hear the differences in nuances and scripting. Being an actor myself, it kind of helps me learn what works in some cases, and what doesn't. :)

Also, as you said, the voices are part of the character; changing the voice actor changes the character in different degrees. I've noticed now that I play Kingdom Hearts in Japanese; Sora is sweeter in the Japanese version, and Kairi sounds more... innocent? Goofy and Donald sound exactly the same, funnily, but I think it's because their voices are so extreme in style. Hearing Jack Sparrow speak Japanese is incredibly strange, though!
Have you seen Kyo Kara Maoh? He's hilarious in that.
Yes! Oh, he's truly awesome in it, haha.

Strangely, the only version available here in Sweden is the dub - Swedish or American, don't ask me why. Usually, the original language is always included, but not on YGO. Unfortunately, that particular manga translation is also a bit... strange. And the manga translations here are often excellent, so I don't know why that series was so unlucky.

Ah, that's probably because of the way the American dub was produced--they edited out entire scenes and episodes from the overall end product because of violence or whatever, so the dub series is actually completely different in some cases from the original. Thankfully, there's only one company that does this anymore, so the only shows that are affected are YuGiOh, Pokemon, and (previously) One Piece... but even One Piece has been given to a company that isn't going to edit out complete scenes.
But yeah, we don't get the Japanese audio on the YuGiOh DVDs over here, either. I don't even think we get a second track on them at all, but I haven't picked one up to look because I've never had interest in buying them. XD
I don't know what to say about the manga, though. That is odd. Maybe they were trying to take a similar approach to it as they did to the show...?

Yeah, we normally don't do that here, but I think that we for some reason bought the American version of the series, both anime and manga. Thankfully I'm now able to read it in Japanese. I just have to save up enough money to buy it all...
