I tried to get into it, and it's funny because I *like* shounen a lot, but I just couldn't really manage to care about JJBA. I don't know why it didn't capture me.
Also, oddly for me, because usually in shounen I can sit back and turn off my brain, I was bothered by how much of a boys' club it was, and kind of wished we could get a girl or two to shake things up.

I'd suggest jumping ahead into Part 6/Stone Ocean then, which has Jolyne Kujo.

Aaaahhh Jojo secret!

I think, despite being the same series and have the same artist and similar themes, you really have to take it part-by-part. In the earlier parts, where it's obvious Araki is still trying to find his own comfort zone (and when the Jojo protagonists look like Kenshiro expies), it's a lot more classic shounen. Genre-defining shounen, even. But somewhere around parts 6 and 7 -- most clearly in the psychedelic mess that is 8 -- something uniquely Jojo has emerged that other shounen series I've read can't capture.

Of course, a big part of this was the move from weekly to monthly updates, as well as it being marketed to a seinen demographic now (CMIIW). Still, for a series that's been going on for 25 years, it's really come a long way in terms of characterization, artstyle, storyline, and even focus, and I don't think it's fair to judge later parts based on earlier parts even if they did provide backstory/framework for the later parts.

Despite my shitting on the earlier parts, they're still my favorite. PB, BT, and SDC will always hold a soft spot in my heart, though I love all the Jojo parts.

Obligatory squee for Part4 anime adaptation, eeeee
