What the fucking fuck.

What the fuck is wrong with the Tumblr generation that they enforce conformity to a non-existent ideal to the point of threatening death? This sounds like something in a dystopian scfi Ray Bradbury story or something, a parable about the Nazis and the slippery slope into banal Fascist evil.

It's not a tumblr generation thing, a similar thing happened to me and others with me, a generation ago at my university. It's wherever you have an insular echo-y environment with strong black and white idealism.

This is the exact same "us vs. them" bullshit that happens ANY time a group of like-minded assholes get together and create an echo chamber.

The problem is, communication advances means the group can be larger.

Not really, because it's happened on very large scales before. Governments. Or any town, school, interest group, camp, campus, or wherever else people form communities. The internet means a lot of people can escape from that IRL, but they can find it online.

Idk, I'm 37, I went to one of the Seven Sisters colleges known for its "hairy-legged, man-eating lesbian" student body (direct quote from a guy at a neighboring college, burned into my brain), and I never encountered anything near this level of "you must be 100% morally pure, according to my morals, not yours, or you are a problematic piece of shit and need to die" extremism.

Maybe it was just the crowd I hung out with or something, but my teen/college years were all about being super edgy and provocative and pushing the envelope (which could be lame and annoying in its own right), not at all about pushing other people to conform to your ideals. Like, at all. You were much more likely to encounter people arguing in defense of some crazy-ass offensive belief just for the sake of argument and rebellion, than ....this horrible dystopian nightmare bullshit.

It isn't inevitable in any strong social justicey environment. There are certain conditions required for it to flourish, including a few strong leaders with good rhetoric, dedication, viciousness that inspire others to follow them, a negative us vs them ideological mindset, a feeling of persecution, and some convenient scapegoats who pissed off the leaders to get things started. It isn't just SJ where this can happen.

The Salem witch trials happened because of a number of conditions meeting together, even though Puritanism had been around for a while in a number of places. A number of people after the fallout from the great radical feminist Australian university campus debacle of '99 compared it to the Crucible (which focused on the witch trials as an analogue of McCarthyism). Unfortunately my campus was the most rabid. The ringleader (also a domestic violence perpetrator!) is now a prominent journalist. Sometimes I catch her on the radio in the car. Ick.

I think they must feel that as long as they're (a) demonstrably marginalized and (b) ideologically pure and acting for the Cause, they belong to an elect that can do no wrong. They're crusading saints bringing on the millennium and the reign of the Holy Ghost. And no, you're not the only person to whom that sounds a lot like Fascism.

It's legitimately worrisome, isn't it? Like, I followed the link to the Tumblr screencaps above and read those posts with my jaw dropped open, feeling like, "This is it, this is the pendulum of history swinging back to the other direction, our kids are fucked."

Unfortunately it is not new behaviour, just new people and new platforms. Similar have happened on DA, LJ hell I think geocities had a similar situation?

SJW and tumblr are just a new rehash of the same old righteous bullies.
