[Takehiko Inoue's "Real"]

Why does an asian guy have an afro? Why?

(Anonymous) 2015-10-27 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
because afro-asian is a real culture?

(Anonymous) 2015-10-27 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
So are they smart or not?

(Anonymous) 2015-10-27 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
... 2/10, two points for the build up to the troll, but nothing more for old canard.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-27 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Because some Japanese have naturally wavy or curly hair.
It's rare but it exists.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-27 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
da

This is true. My dad had one in his 30s.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-28 06:43 am (UTC)(link)
A lot of them also get it curled. Japanese guys are a lot more fashion-conscious... they get perms done at salons.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-28 08:23 am (UTC)(link)
It could be a perm. There was a specific kinky perm style (not that one) that was distinctively Japanese and very popular for years.

Is it really always the good series? Or are you only aware of scanlations being dropped on series you like?

Anyway, I used to help scanlate, and my only reason for doing so was to work on stuff I liked and wanted faster access to. Accolades were never a consideration.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-27 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, this is indeed a sad thing. Guess quality has it always harder than popularity but can this really be the only explanation?

Haha, this secret just reminded me that I ought to check if MPD Psycho has gotten any more chapters scanlated. Last time I checked there were still two more volumes left to go. And it never got updated so I stopped checking.

Is this cover art from the actual manga? (Or fanart, maybe?) Either way it's absolutely gorgeous. Nice character designs, pretty colors. Have no idea about the story, but the art is great.

Anyway, that sucks OP. :( This is one reason I don't often read manga...it's kind of stressful trying to keep up with it.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-28 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
mangaka's a known plagiarist from well back though

(Anonymous) 2015-10-28 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
Are you talking about the NBA pictures traced?

I don't think that's at the same level as plagiarism.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-28 10:47 am (UTC)(link)
SA

Yeah. This guy was SO influential that it's always left a really crappy taste in my mouth. Tracing's a shitty thing to do! But maybe I dislike him for it this much because I want to dislike an influential dude as much as I dislike Naoko Takeuchi, who ripped off all the half-decent fashion designs in her manga, and who was so important to so many girls growing up.

I don't know the extent of this tracing you guys are talking about so I'll just say that if legitimate plagiarism went on then that's extremely disappointing.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-28 02:36 pm (UTC)(link)
It wasn't that bad. Some poses during the games and a few covers.
Here are some examples: http://comipress.com/article/2007/07/09/2267

Now, compared with cases of certain mangas copying several panels of other mangas... well.

Huh, interesting.

Tbh the D.Gray-man examples seem to be reaching pretty hard, to me.

I feel like when you're doing a sports manga it's a bit inevitable that certain poses might make their way onto the page. To me that doesn't so much even feel like plagiarism as much as it does research... You wouldn't want basketball players not to look like basketball players should.

Some of those examples are indeed very obvious and terrible, but the NBA ones, not so much imo.

But why wouldn't they scan the more popular series? Numerically, that does a lot more people more good - and statistically speaking they're more likely to be the series the scanners like too.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-28 06:42 am (UTC)(link)
Uhh, crazy suggestion here OP, you could BUY the LEGITIMATE copy and actually support the goddamn author instead of pirating.

But why aren't there any scanlations?? Maybe because the kind of person who would want to work on this project is fucking respectful of licensed works.

Might work in this case, doesn't work in a lot of cases where the manga will never ever see the western world in translated form.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-28 07:43 am (UTC)(link)
that art style doesn't look appealing enough to attract scanlators, sry2say

(Anonymous) 2015-10-28 03:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know if scanlations are anything like fansubbing, but I know in my experience, the "good stuff" is always "claimed" by half a dozen people. Or you get partway through the series, and another group (or several) picks it up.

Then those parties drop it, but by that time, I'm just so done with fighting over a property with another fangroup.

Popular stuff, you already know dozens of groups are going to translate it, so if you do it, too, you'll already know you're not the only kid on the block doing it.

/translator who's filling her list with "crap" shows because the "good" ones keep being claimed.

They may be harder to translate? You can translate some shonen manga with 20 pages of sword flipping and a bunch of grunting way faster than something plotty with complex dialogue and a lot more text.

You're talking about a manga that is seinen (aimed at older audiences, hence, a higher reading level--more difficult to translate) AND a sports manga.
