Well. Have fun getting mistreated then.
You have no obligation to be nice to people who treated you badly. Basic politeness is more than enough in such cases.

I'm always surprised how people act like there is no middleground between being super nice and being a dick.

The only thing the secret is saying is that OP doesn't want to become cruel in answer to people being cruel to them, I don't see how you get extreme doormat from that.

I think you're reading an awful lot into this secret...it didn't sound like OP was talking about being nice/mean to specific individuals who were mean to them, but their approach to the world in general. And in fact becoming cruel to everybody because of your experience isn't a good thing even if your experience sucks, because it just makes the world worse, so I have to agree with OP.

There's a huge difference between not letting cruel people make you cruel and being a doormat.
