When I was a teenager, my cellphone died while I was waiting for a friend and trying to find her, and I asked some random person to borrow theirs.

Surprisingly after a minute's hesitation they let me borrow it, but it took me way too long to figure out what the objection was.

I don't know, this isn't an uncommon practice where I come from. Sure, many people will rightfully refuse to give you theirs, but it's not the "I can't believe I've done it" level of shameful to ask if you genuinely need it.

Same. I've had lots of people ask to borrow my phone. I never thought it was strange.
