Well, the failboat comments have already been made, so...

Look. You can't compare PS2-era games to SNES-era games. Why? Because games like Kingdom Hearts wouldn't be what they are without the influences of games like Super Mario RPG, Earthbound, and Chrono Trigger! Early RPGs came up with 90% of the concepts that were used in later ones - from basic things like leveling up, equipment, random battles and map encounters, and stats, magic and skills, to evolving job classes and job trees, combo attacks, summons, investing AP in specific stats or skills, making decisions that actually affect the plot, character affection stats...

Like those double-attacks in Super Mario RPG? The expand on it in Legend of Dragoon, and in Eternal Sonata guarding works in a similar fashion. Chrono Trigger had seamless map to battle action long before FFXII.

Games like Seiken Densetsu, Tales of Phantasia and Star Ocean set up complex action-RPG setups that were ten times more involved than the button-mashing involved in Kingdom Hearts, back on the SUPER NINTENDO when they could barely fit all that information on the cartridge. These oldschool games didn't have anything to work off, they didn't HAVE ten years of history in the genre to work off.

Older (console) games couldn't attract audiences with hot graphics and bishies (*cough*Organization XIII*cough*), so they put work into what REALLY mattered - innovation. That's why I love retro gaming.

Dude, fail troll fails. D:

...and that would be Seiken Densetsu 2 and 3 I'm talking about. 1 was for the GameBoy, I think.
