Procrastination.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-02 12:49 am (UTC)(link)

I tend to self-sabotage, and lately I've begun snacking when I should be doing something else. Something important, with deadlines.

Any suggestions?

Procrastination sucks and it's difficult to get over, but when you realize you're snacking force yourself to do the thing. Maybe make it difficult to snack without shame. If you live alone or have understanding roommates, maybe put an angry face (of your favorite character) with something along the lines of "stop procrasinating, you should be working" on your fridge and pantry or wherever you keep snacks.

idk just throwing out dumb ideas

Try gum so you at least have something to chew on and you can't chew other things with it.

I've said this before but what I do is break things down into absurdly tiny steps so that I can build up momentum by crossing off a lot of things on my to do list and feel productive.

I also will tell myself that I only need to spend ten minutes on work and then I can stop. That makes it less overwhelming and easier to start on, and often I go right past that ten minute mark because I've gotten absorbed in what I'm doing. Otherwise I keep myself honest and stop there, taking a break to do something else before trying again for another ten minutes.

You can try allowing yourself 5 minutes of procrastination time. Set a timer with an alarm, and make your mind up that when the alarm goes off, you start the task you've been putting off. If you have trouble staying on task, set the alarm again and tell yourself that you'll work for 30 minutes, then take another 5 minute break to do something fun. It's basically giving yourself a reward to work towards.

But honestly? Tips only get you so far. You know what the problem is, and it can only really be fixed by you exerting some self discipline, putting down your snack and doing the task, without making excuses or dragging your feet. Nobody else can do that for you.
