The show takes place in the distant future where people are living on Mars. Africa as a continent could easily have become more powerful and Europe weaker in that time.

Even in the original UC timeline, the Federation's headquarters eventually moved to Dakar (in Senegal) after Jaburo was wiped out. It's possible it could have even been a subtle reference to that (if you look closely at the full map, there's even a big chunk taken out of Australia where Sydney used to be, just like what happened in the UC 0079).

"Africa as a continent could easily have become more powerful and Europe weaker in that time."

Population changes could easily support that, specially since the issue of aging population is already a thing in some countries in RL.

I don't know how far in the future this is supposed to be; but I wouldn't be surprised if it's called "African Union," but it substantially descends from a mix of present European institutions and the present-day Francophonie--and includes a lot of nationalities that we today would think of as "Europeans" and mixed-race Westerners.

Well, I said below that its extent is surprising. Which it is. But if it existed, it'd probably be vaguely French. (Or Anglophone, or Arabic.) ;p
