Re: Unpopular opinions
She took a topic with a lot of targets. Not wrong, not warped, Video games are kinda... well... like I said, she didn't have to look hard to find perfectly valid examples of women being reduced to sexual objects, or at least male gazed (Hell, look at metal gear V right now. Why is the hot chick on the team the only one not wearing sensible clothes? There's a bullshit canon answer but it's not very good!)
The thing is... she got really lucky, and then it seemed like she got really lazy. She wanted some money to fund her project talking about games. She got more then she asked for. A LOT more. Apparently a lot of people wanted to have this conversation!
The thing is... she whiffed it. Her early videos were her presented at what was frankly a college project level. Her later videos are her presenting at what is frankly a college project level.
While we can't really expect somebody to magically get good just because people put trust/money into them, it didn't even seem like she improved her camera, something she was saying she was going to do! Also, and more daminigly in my opinion, she DIDN'T. PLAY. THE. GAMES. She said she would have time to play the games and, you know, know on a different level what she was talking about then you would watching a let's play. Sometimes, this means you miss stuff. She gets facts wrong sometimes that make it clear she's studying this rather then it being something she's actually doing and/or passionate about (that is to say, she's very interested in how women are depicted in gaming, but she's not interested IN gaming. This is not a "fake geek girl" situation, as she's never actually claimed to be a gamer from anything I've seen, but some people do scoff at being told anything about what they love by somebody outside the group) And instead, that's what she did. She took let's plays, watched those, and talked about them. WITHOUT GIVING PEOPLE CREDIT.
Now, I don't think she's some dishonest fraud who plagerizes everything... I think she was put in over her head. This thing became bigger then it would have been expected to be, and she couldn't grow fast enough to match the hype. She's still putting out a college level presentation project. If that's all it was, I think she'd be more kindly judged. Oh sure, there's real misogeny in gaming and intellectual cowards and those pepole were always going to give her shit, but there's other people who just aren't impressed. And when somebody is hyped as much as she has been, fair or not, you're expected to impress.
