It's not just you being Asian. I'm white British and I found Paul Merton's similar gig in China a few years back similarly cringeworthy. What's wrong with a Chinese celeb fronting?

I have a feeling that the people who make such shows enjoy seeing the whole "fish out of water" effect of culture shock with a white British person in Asia. I don't mind seeing someone experience a new culture and country for the first time, but when they make an unnecessary spectacle of themselves I feel really weird about it. Like oh, my culture is sooooooo weird and exotic that white people can't navigate it, blah blah blah...
