It has only been 3 sessions so your therapist may be trying to get a better grasp of your baseline moods/issues before starting to be more directive. It also may be due to their specific ideology, the particular school or theory they follow. You can ask the therapist what philosophy or theorist they follow in their practice because it does dictate their strategies for helping their clients.

I prefer therapists with an emphasis on Rogerian theory because I like that Carl Rogers believed that the therapist needed to have a "warm, positive regard" for the client (among other things). I have always found therapists who espouse his school of thought to be kind and dedicated. This is possibly perception bias on my part, but it is also my personal experience.
