There's nothing particularly wrong with Gawker Media tbh

I mean they have their sins but if you want to DNL Gawker Media, you should DNL pretty much any Internet media organization. I think the hostility towards them is kind of overblown.

Class (nurses tend to be lower-class, doctors higher class) and gender (nurses are more likely to be female, doctors to be male). So if your politics are broadly left, it's going to follow that you're going to be more sympathetic to nurses. Also, I think there's a prevalent cultural meme - and I don't know how true it is - that nurses work much harder than doctors while being paid much less. So that might contribute to it. Finally, I think at least in the US, when you're in the medical system, you're mostly going to deal with nurses - and so any experience of kindness or support or compassion is likely to come from them - whereas doctors because of how the system works tend to just run in and out and can often come off as very brusque. So there's that emotional tinge to it.

IDK. I mean, I think it probably is true that the medical education and training system & the medical system genreally is kind of fucked in a way that might lead to doctors being shitty. But that's a generalization of course.

I thought both were pretty respected, and kind of considered sexy? Nursing is like, the least sexy job experience afaik, but the stereotype is of doctors and nurses being sexually attractive.

Even less sexy than nursing: being a nurse's aide.

My mother has needed in-home care for a couple of years now; the aides come in for 4 hours most mornings to get mom bathed and dressed, make sure she takes her meds, and the like, and for another 3-4 hours on some afternoons to help her exercise and give Dad a respite so he can do things like get groceries or go to the gym. These young women are mostly moonlighting as carers while their main job is as CNAs in a hospital or care facility. They sometimes tell us about their regular work, and it's a real sore point with them that they are (a) spread too thin and (b) basically shat on by nurses who depend on them to do all the dirty work of patient care.

I agree with that. A lot of places work CNAs so hard and spread them so thin that they actually endanger patients, and the CNAs. It's sickening.

I think it's stupid, to disclaim.

But nurses are the ones who do the "work" with taking care of patients. Doctors are the ones who diagnose and suggest cures, nurses carry it out. I can see how doctors can be intimidating and scary, while a nurse is supposed to be nurturing and 'actually' help you.

I respect both of them, but I feel like nurses are the ones who are looked down on or ignored by the general public. So I'm going to push for recognition for them. Plus my god-mother and almost-brother-in-law are both nurses, so there is the family connection that makes me want to root for them.

I've had both good and bad experiences with both, so I'm pretty neutral on both.

I don't know about the worship/hatred question, but I do know from my times in hospital that the people you see the most are the nurses. Doctors come around once a day, check your stats and then move on. Nurses are the ones who answer your call button and usually do the regular dressing and redressing of wounds.

Because a lot of doctors act like utter fuckheads, are rude and dismissive, or scary, or mean, or just plain don't seem to care. Plus, they're in and out and don't take much time. Nurses, generally, will talk and be sympathetic and help you, and they do most of the day-to-day work.

(I grew up in a 'medical' household with an anesthetist for a dad and a registered nurse for a mom. I know exactly how fucking horrifying doctors can be.)

Honestly, a lot of nurses are the same way. Part of it's compassion fatigue, part of it's some assholes should never be allowed in any form of patient care whatsoever.

Well, generally I would say that the nurses I've met have been really, really good to me while the majority of doctors I've met were either ineffective or indifferent to my needs. Granted being a doctor isn't easy and requires a lot of objectivity, but there is such a thing as establishing rapport and good bedside manner. :/ Generally I'd say nurses are highly intelligent and wonderful people who do a lot for patients, but I've also heard a lot of people say they are shitty in Hospices and certain care homes.

LOL I work in a hospital, and trust me, it's the other way around.
