Tonight, I cut off my mother. I'm a disabled lesbian woman who brought her fiancee to live with her and her grandfather who is supporting us, because she, also disabled, was supposed to be able to get SSI much faster than me since she'd had it before when she was a minor. Except it didn't go so well and Papa's being patient.

Tonight, Mother revealed that she doesn't think my fiancee was abused. Even though her father told her to jump out of moving vehicles, screamed at her that she'd get better if she really wanted to, would literally break down doors, and used to physically abuse her brother. And her reasoning? Because my fiancee went to her father's deathbed because she wanted to forgive him and be a bigger person.

When I told her she owes my fiancee an apology, she fired back that she needs tougher skin and to let others have opinions. I outright told her to apologize or I would no longer be her daughter.

She responded with a huge text wall about how she was abused, called worthless, raped, beaten down verbally and emotionally and all sorts of horrible things that I already knew about and how she'd never considered any of that abuse, so clearly she had my fiancee beat and other bullshit like that.

I finally told her that I know what happened to her (she's beaten me over the head with how horrible her life is so clearly mine can never be so bad). But that it doesn't give her a right to do this and treat it like some competition. I called he horrible and ugly inside and disgusting for all of this vitriol she was spewing.

I told her I no longer considered her my mother.

And then I finally outright said that I will no longer be her doormat and that I don't even consider her a sister since I was raised by my grandparents.

And I'll be showing all of this horribleness to her father, Papa, so he can see and be in the know because I absolutely don't trust her to misrepresent what happened today to get what she wants: an apology from me because I dared question her.

I'm still shaking, but I'm proud of myself.

Good for you. Being the victim of something does not give anyone the right to victimize others.

Thank you. I think I'm still in the phase of needing a bit of validation, because she has me kind of trained to think that she's right and I'm wrong. So there's still that annoying voice in my head telling me I should apologize.

I know I shouldn't. But it's still going to be hard.

Try not to listen to that annoying voice telling you to apologize (I know how that feels, I listen to a similar voice that tells me to not speak up and just avoid conflict with my family). You should be proud of standing up for yourself and for your fiance. You've not anything that warrants an apology. You've spoken your mind, drawn a line in the sand, and hopefully that will make a difference in your life. Stay positive and hang on to the people who love you.

Sorry your mom is being such a butt. Good for you for calling her on her bullshit. It's sad she was abused, but even sadder she carries it around like a broken compass that always points toward ME! ME! ME! and believes it gives her the right deny others the right to their own suffering.

(Yeah, I kind of know where you're coming from. It sucks, and I'm sorry.)
