Does anyone still use those these days?

Did anyone ever use them in the first place? What does someone need to know the steepness of a hill for? Maybe builders, but that's about it.

I just replied, but yes, engineers use it all the time still. It's all drawn on the computer now and printed out so it's easier to work with.

Heh. I will gladly trade the ability to some budding engineering student, for a small portion of their math skills.

When you are out camping/hiking? That's why I learnt how to read that kind of maps, because you don't want to end up somewhere you can't climb up or alternatively have to walk twice as long because the hill is too steep where you planned to go.

Landscape architects? Environmental scientists?

I do on a regular basis. I have to be able to read the topographic map from surveys in order to set the footing elevations below the frost line. So structural engineers and civil engineers use the topographic surveys all the time.

I use it for work nearly every day. Looking at Google satellite view really doesn't get the topography across very well and I need to know how sloped/rugged/swampy to expect a place to be before I go out there.
