I absolutely back using large needles for scarves, but Fun Fur is not a good starter yarn. For one thing, it's like lace yarn, and usually I've seen people knit it paired with a sport weight or something just to give it some body.

Buy some superbulky and cheap as hell yarn, because nobody's first project is good, and by the time you're done with half the scarf you'll have pretty much figured out how garter stitch works. If it ends up terribly lopsided and uneven, you can always donate it to the local homeless shelter, because like hell they care if it's ugly as long as it's warm. After that, all you need to do is learn how to purl, increase/decrease and how to use a circular/set of double points and you can pretty much knit anything. It's a great hobby for watching videos with, and if there's a yarn store near you, they will ABSOLUTELY have tons of advice and beginner projects for you.
