What? They had next to zero interaction. That would have been cool but that's just wishful thinking.

Not interaction. Characterization of females.

nayrt

...they were both awesome in the first series, too though? in fact I definitely liked Winry better in the first one.

DA. Me too.

Thirded.

Meh. Riza was reduced to her love for Mustang. Even her signing up in the army was to keep close to him and not that much of a career choice. Talk about a waste of potential.

+1

That wasn't (just) about love, though. She stayed close to him so that she could take him the fuck out if he A) revealed the secrets of fire alchemy, or B) turned into a dictator who no longer cared about the people. She was willing to take the shot no one else could.

That they also had feelings for each other was a separate factor.

I disagree here. I got the nagging feeling that she revealed the secret of fire alchemy to him because she was already in love with him, which is not a smart move.
Also, compare the fight Riza vs Archer in the anime: she keeps fighting, whatever happened to Roy and only collapse in tears for Roy after Archer is dead. Riza vs Lust in the manga however: the second Lust pretends Roy is already dead, Riza stops fighting and starts crying. How fucking weak and only defined by her love for Roy does she appears here?
