OP here...Sorry about being vague, I'm not playing the "Guess who's it's about" game, I just know for a fact that I'm one of the rare fans of the said show who took such immense interest into this particular character and saying who the character is would make me quite a bit less anonymous.

Ah, alright then. It's just been happening such a lot lately and I always wonder what the point is.

On the topic of your secret itself though: It's perfectly understandable! Never seen again side characters you liked are such a sad thing...

Yes, I did notice the trend lately. I knew adding to it might seem annoying, but I had to get these feeling off my chest without revealing who I was.

It is awful when you're 99% sure the character you adore is never going to appear again (theoretically, it's possible I suppose, but I haven't seen any signs of that happening any time soon).

Why would you be so ashamed of liking a character that you need to stay anonymous?

If you said who it was, others might actually take an interest and it could possibly mean more new fans for them!

Just speaking as someone who has very particular favorites and would be immediately identified if I talked about them anonymously or made a secret about them, I get it. It's not really about being ashamed, though I do get extremely embarrassed and distressed sometimes over my fannishness over certain characters, but more that you just don't want to be recognized as "oh, that annoying fan going on about someone no one cares about."

nayrt

This. I am irrationally fond of a character in my (closed-canon, very tiny) fandom who appeared on all of 2 episodes. All I would have to do is say that character's name and everyone would be pointing at me and eyerolling.

It's a lonely thing to love a minor character :'-(

This is me. I have one character who I adore to the nth degree, and yet I tend to keep that to myself. Because... I don't even know why, exactly, but it makes me feel vulnerable for people to know that I have this over-the-top love for that one character.

I can't really explain it, but I've been that way with almost all of my most-favorite characters.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-09 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, exactly, this is how I feel as well. I have no problem expressing admiration for certain characters I like but don't have a crush on, but when I fall head-over-heels for a character I keep it to myself (or I'm being extremely subtle and low-key about it).

(Anonymous) 2015-11-09 06:16 am (UTC)(link)
Just how much do you think people care about you that we would go "Oh! A secret about X! Must fingals! Couldn't possibly be anyone else!!"

(Anonymous) 2015-11-09 06:45 am (UTC)(link)
People have literally done that, multiple times

Like, that exact thing has happened repeatedly

(Anonymous) 2015-11-09 07:49 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, you've got your handful of trolls who think all OC writers are jaybie and all wrestler fans are...whichever one of is is all about the wrestling. But those are blatant trolls. To assume the average FSer would automatically know without a shadow of a doubt that "THIS SECRET IS BY MEEE!!!!" is the height of narcissism.

Ain't none of us that important to the world around here.

Lmao. I know you're joking now because every time a wrestling secret was posted most of the comments were "Hi, Fingal." So the fact that you mention wrestling and then pointedly avoid mentioning me is pretty funny. Kudos. :)

People have their own personal reasons for wanting relative anonymity that might not always make sense to someone else because they're, well, personal. I'm not the OP but I have similar situations where the subject is either too easily identifiable with me (small fandom, unusual ship) or where I'm not ready to network about it yet and just want a safe space to admit that I feel what I feel.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-08 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
OP here. I wouldn't say I'm ashamed, I have expressed my fondness of the character before, but never admitted to how much I actually adored them because that would be slightly embarrassing. If I say who this secret is about, I just know someone will recognize me (since I'm one of the few who still talks about them) and think of me as "that one fan who's got the hots for that one character no-one cares about anymore" and I kinda don't want that.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-09 06:17 am (UTC)(link)
jfc you are not as memorable as you think.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-09 07:39 am (UTC)(link)
Not op, but I have once submitted a secret about a specific character from a TV show that doesn't get all too many secrets and later on whenever another secret about the character pops up, several people will go "oh it's that obsessive freak again". Seriously, some thought they were all made by me. So I can totally get why the op didn't specify who this is about.
