Old Stuff You've Rediscovered

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2015-11-08 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
What is some stuff from your childhood that you rediscovered by accident or on purpose (especially if it took your forever to find it)?

Thanks to reddit, I was able to find two cartoons that I had only the vaguest (but fondest) memories of. They were the Britannica's Tales From Around The World (Pat Morita narrated some!). Specifically the St Olaf and the Troll and Rumpelstiltskin ones! They are as great as I remember them.

I saw a meme about being born in the 70's and raised in the 80's, with all the cartoons represented and I recognized Gilda Gossip from Galaxy High. I didn't get to see much of that series, but loved the bits I did see.

Might go look for clips...

Wow. It has a role playing game based off of it. That is pretty damn cool.

When I was a kid, I was really into the Babysitter's Club and they aired a TV show on Disney Channel (originally on HBO, but I didn't know that until recently). Netflix has both the movie that came out later and the TV series so I sent a bit of time reliving my nostalgia for the series.

Huh. I did not know they had movies or a TV show! I read some of the books as a kid though. I might give those a watch when I finish X-Files and run out of stuff to watch.

The movie came out right when I was in the height of it, so I think 1995 because they just celebrated 20 years and had a panel somewhere.

The TV show is only 13 episodes, so it's super short and easy to watch. It's similar to some of the books and very cheesy.

I only ever saw the first movie. I loved those books as a kid.

Oh, I LOVED "Baby-Sitters Club"! I had the books, the VHS of the shows, the movie...

It'd be fun to go back and rewatch/reread some of that stuff again.

I was at Walgreen's the other day and they had Count Chocula and Frankenberry cereal on sale 2 boxes for 5 bux so I bought a box of each. The Count Chocula marshmallows taste the same but the cereal is different than from what I remember, its coated with more flavoring to make the milk more chocolaty, I suppose. The Frankenberry marshmallows are different colors and flavors (an unspecific sweet berry-ish flavor) and the cereal is a bright screaming neon pink now, lol. I liked it but probably wouldn't get Count Choula again, ha-ha.

Oh man, my sister was so damn excited when she saw they had released that. Now all they need is to release Kaboom and my sister can die happy.

My favorite book as a kid was Pepita Thinks Pink. I just learned yesterday that it's a series of books while browsing the for sale section at the library. I bought all of them and can't wait to read them to my daughter.

That is always SO much fun. I've actually bought all the Bunnicula/Howliday Inn series to read to my nephew when he gets a bit older.

Long Ago & Far Away remains awesome, especially the ones for all the folk tales. I really wish there was an official dvd release; but because they were shorts from a bunch of different studios from all around the world, and PBS just put them together into episodes with the James Earl Jones intros and distributed it, they are all owned by their original creators. Too many conflicting licenses to make dvds. At least I have several episodes we taped transferred from vhs to dvd, and then there's more on youtube.

That sucks! Are you able to find collections anywhere online? In less...legal places?

I tried rewatching the Powerpuff Girls recently. It didn't hold up as well as I had hoped.

Aw that always sucks. What doesn't hold up? The animation or story or characters?

The story just is pretty childish. It doesn't have that thing that some cartoons do where it works for both children and adults. And it feels too cheesy to me. I think it is still a good cartoon for kids, but it just to me isn't really a thing I can enjoy as an adult.

I have been having an absolute blast watching TeenNick's "The Splat" over the past month. "Mystery Files of Shelby Woo", "Are You Afraid of the Dark?", "Welcome Freshmen", "Hey Dude", "You Can't Do That on Television", and then all the Nicktoons... All my favorite shows from childhood-so fun revisiting them all.

And yeah, looking back, some of them are rather hokey and cheesy...but I care not :D.

Oh, man I need to watch that. Those are all the shows I love. But I am not sure if we get that channel. D:
