See if the roof looks good: minimal moss, all drains drain attached properly, no missing shingles from the top.

Make sure there are no visible plumbing leaks or leaks in the ceiling (e.g. stains).

Make sure the layout is the way you want it and you don't have trouble with any strange architecture choices. For example, if there's a staircase that makes you feel lightheaded and unsteady going down it, that's a thing to be wary of.

Check any fences for signs of disrepair, particularly on the other side of the fence. If there's an aggressive or destructive dog that the neighbours own, this is a good way to tell.

Put your hands in front of the windows to check for drafts.

Flush toilets, turn on faucets, turn on showers, turn on fans in showers, turn on light switches, turn on appliances, check all wall outlets and heaters and ceiling fans.

Don't worry about wall colors, do worry about wall conditions. Make sure you can't see signs of mold in closets and corners that might get damp.

Try to visit during the afternoon so you get a good idea of how much light the place gets and how much light the yard gets.

Go around the outside and check the foundations and other areas to make sure they aren't susceptible to termites (any wood areas should be bordered by gravel, in general there should be a good inch of concrete next to the ground).

Check outside structures for dry rot.

Try to get into the attic, if you can, to make sure there's adequate ventilation and insulation. It should be warm! If you have a cold attic, you are going to have a VERY cold house in the winter.

Try to spend a little time in the neighbourhood to get a sense of noise levels as well. If this means kinda creeping a little then so be it. I went two or three times to check out the house at different times of day to make sure there weren't any overly noisy neighbours before we decided to buy our place.
