Princess Leia is no longer a slave

(Anonymous) 2015-11-08 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
It took 38 years to free her and Ms Fisher from this slavery, but Pricess Leia will no longer be defined by the acts of rape and sexual violence represented by that fucking costume. It is sad it took so long, but I feel this is a big win for female geeks. Anyone with me?

Hi radfem anon, we've mostly seen her in her normal outfit and in fact the slave outfit has always had canonically negative connotations.

Canonically yes, but in fandom not so much.

Then why the announcement and the "after 38 years" thing? I'm pretty sure the people who used to define her by the slave costume will continue to do so.

I'm not even sure what you're asking here. The Slave Leia thing has long been equal parts a gag/something special for the boyfriend (or girlfriend) etc. It's been that way for literally decades. There's a lot of people who find that offensive, which it is, but you can't pretend that it has no cultural cachet beyond creepy neckbeards. People have been dressing up in the costume since before you were even born.

Arguably, if the costume hadn't become such a major icon of the series through vintage fandom memes, unofficial costumes and other forms of cultural transmission, I doubt we'd be hearing so much about the costume now.

And anyway "38 years" is wrong because Return of the Jedi came out in 1983. So more like 32 years.

I meant, why is the OP claiming that now she is "no longer a slave"? What happened to somehow destroy the slave bikini meme?

Now that they own it, Disney has decided to not do slave leia stuff anymore. So presumably this means no slave leia official toys, on playing cards, etc.

TBF I can understand why Disney is doing that. Because, you know, Disney.

Not to mention that depending on the contract, they might not own the rights to merchandising for the first six films.

ahahahahaha you think disney would be that amateurish with their contracts hahahahaaha

They did it with Marvel.

I always thought she was defined by an act of Godawful Fashion and Horrible Taste, because the ear buns hairstyle was always the iconic one I saw everyone else apply to her, not really the slave bikini.

I know you're probably radfem anon trying to start wank again, but I actually agree with the sentiment.

So sick of all the slave Leia merchandise being churned out, as opposed to, IDK, merchandise with Leia in literally any of the other outfits she wears in canon.

Alright, so OP picked the most dramatic way to express themselves, but is everyone else going out of their way to be a killjoy or...?

Leia has been predominantly featured in the slave costume in a lot of official and non-official merch. Official merch will no longer feature the slave costume and will instead portray other aspects of the character. How is this not something to celebrate?

I've been in this fandom for YEARS, including attending conventions, and haven't seen much of the slave costume merch at all. I've seen more official merch and art of Leia in her Senator robes from the very beginning, and her gear at the end of RotJ. The slave-costume stuff I've seen has been nearly all fan-created crap.
