Yeah, the fannish circles I've been around have always been socially liberal and very conscious about it, I'm not denying that. It's just that it used to be commonly assumed agreements like homophobia is bad and it's a newbie mistake to bash female characters and no-one liked President Bush, and flamewars/wank were mostly about interpretation of canon. These days, it feels like 50% of the space in fannish circles is made up of social issues.
