I mean using the word "asshole" will alienate you from certain people.

I think it's less "some words should not be used by anyone who wants to be a decent person" but more read the mood of a conversation and be aware that there's certain words that might offend people.

For the most part language policing isn't effective, especially with word ingrained in everyday speech. People usually end up saying them anyway, just not around people who'll be offended. And even if it were, the point of slurs is to be offensive, so people would come up with equally nasty alternatives.
