Yeah, I never understood why they didn't cast Julie in the movie since she originated the role on Broadway.

From what I've been able to tell, Julie wasn't cast for two reasons:

1) Jack Warner felt they needed an actual movie star, which Julie wasn't at the time they were casting MFL.

2) Rex Harrison didn't like Julie Andrews because he thought she was a one-note actress. To be fair, MFL was Julie's second major Broadway role, so she wasn't yet THE Julie Andrews, y'know?

Interestingly enough, I read that Warner initially tried to recast Rex Harrison with Cary Grant, and there's some theories out there that if Grant had taken the role, then Julie would've stayed on as Eliza since Warner would've had his marquee name movie actor in one of the roles. When Grant turned it down, Julie was out and Audrey Hepburn took her place.

Personally, I think this bit of information actually puts more weight on the "Harrison didn't like Andrews" theory, especially since Harrison was the bigger star at the time. That is, assuming it's true that Warner initially tried to replace Harrison.

In fairness, though, because Julie was shut out of MFL, she wound up getting Marry Poppins AND the Oscar. So, overall, maybe she was better off that things turned out the way they did. A loss for us, maybe, but definitely a win for her
