"gay" and "retarded" are both words that were and are applied to groups within the last 10 years, "lame," "dumb," and "stupid" are so divorced from their original contexts that to compare the two is ridiculous. when you say something is "gay," it's understood that something is bad because gay is bad. when you say something is "lame," it's understood that it's bad, not because being unable to walk is bad, but because the word lame has developed its own definition and has for decades. almost no one uses "dumb" as a synonym for "mute" anymore, so the original association isn't even there. "gay" and "retarded" have no such separation.
