I believe anon is under the misinformed impression that getting engaged makes people common law partners.

In reality, that only requires you to be living with a person, and there are no real legal benefits to be had from that arrangement aside from the government benefitting from being able to deny certain welfare benefits.

Uh... not sure where you are, but I don't know of any countries where you get legal benefits from just getting engaged.
