isn't that middle paragraph why sony almost died on its arse at one point (because the ps2 was selling better as a dvd player than a games console XD

and yeah, remember that the ps3 did have ps2 backwards compatibility at one point... by including a ps2 cpu, which almost roasted the thing

the only way you could get backwards compatibility working at the moment is to include a ps3 processor inside a ps4 (or a 360 processor inside an xbone), and considering how legendarily those things belted out heat you'd end up with about fourteen fans on the go just to stop it boiling

Yep, exactly. Although iirc the PS3 is more infamous for that, especially since Sony slimmed down the PS2 fairly quickly and it went on to become such a big hit.

People are really quick to forget that both Sony and Microsoft have tried to make this work. The PS3 had it for a while, and the PS2 always had it. But the more advanced gaming hardware gets, the harder it is to jam it all in one little box and make it work. And just look at the bitching about how large the PS4 and XBone are! As if a console that's designed to stay cutting edge for a decade should somehow be squished down to the size of a tablet. And then you want to try and cram 2-3 more consoles in there on top of an already over-taxed system?

I totally feel a lot of the complaints about the gaming industry, and I think both Sony and Microsoft drop the ball a lot. But this is definitely not one of those fuck-ups.
