They probably have a repetitive motion that involves their mouth/teeth and they can use the toy instead of something like fingernails, pencils, hair, cloth, whatever they usually use. And it's probably a self-soothing thing. You get tense, you start to fidget like that without thinking about it.

For me it's my hair. I twist it around my forefinger in a kind of almost-knot and stroke it with my thumb and rub it against my upper lip. It's not even really a conscious thing, I do it without thinking when I'm stressed and have to either wear my hair in a bun or take a great deal of effort not to do it.

It's something that's common with people on the autistic spectrum, but plenty of other people do it too, there's just a lot more effort put into hiding it or 'curing it' rather than shrugging and finding a non-harmful substitute.

I drag my fangs along my lower lip repeatedly. It's very soothing for some reason.
