Holy shit, where is "back home" for you? I've never even heard of prices that low! I'm Canadian and I'm with the cheapest provider, on their second cheapest plan, and it's $38/month all told. And that's literally half the price of everyone else (but the internet is glacial, which is the rub).

Israel. Several years back the Minister of Communications decided to screw the cellphone companies and abolished contracts - meaning, you can switch carriers, no cost, whenever you want, and they could no longer force you to buy a phone or charge you any extra for not buying from them. Competition suddenly became fierce, as a few companies opened that undercut the market like crazy. Prices dropped, and now you can get quite reasonable plans at reasonable speeds for decent prices.
Also, there's free wifi *everywhere*. Public parks, buses, trains... now I am SO SORE over how much I'm paying.

Another Canadian chiming in to tell you that we've been gouged for years. Americans do have it cheaper than us, but we're a pretty low bar to leap over when it comes to that.

Dude, I'm in Germany and I pay 7€ a month for 100 free minutes, 150 free texts (possibly the other way around, I never hit the limits so I never remember which is which) and 200 or 300 GB fast internet, then slow-down to snail pace for the rest of the month.

What's making phone plans so expensive in North America?

Corporate greed, as always.

what's that? congstar?
the phone wasn't included though, was it? I recently got a contract with otelo and I thought I got it pretty cheap at 24€/month including paying off the Samsung S5 mini...
