Time and politics are leaving me behind

(Anonymous) 2015-11-11 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
So My favourite film of recent-ish years has been Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

Watched it for the first time in a while today. Jesus Christ how did I not notice how homophobic and misogynistic it is? It's AWFUL. I mean, seriously, I expect to watch a film from the 60's and be taken aback by how gross it is, but not a film that's not even 20 years old yet! How did we go from something so wrong to where we are so quickly that I didn't even notice?

It is supposed to be that way. The narrator is an asshole.

Yeah, it's more like The Point that's leaving OP behind, not the times.

The narrator is a sexist, homophobic asshole and the film is colored through that lens and the sexism and homophobia of the people around him.

It's like watching a 1920s mob movie and marveling that the mobsters are murderers. They're supposed to be. That's the point.

NAYRT - I've never seen the movie, so I don't know how obvious/subtle this was, but OP, were you maybe younger when you saw it? It's possible you missed some of those things.

AYRT

It's a black comedy about a burglar masquerading as an actor that gets involved with contract killers, asshole PIs, and the mob.

If OP was expecting everybody in it to be respectful of womens' choices and pro gay marriage, wat.

tbh sounds like you're with the times and leaving shitty movies behind.

Just imagine, 70 years from now 20-somethings will feel the same exact way about our entertainment right now!

That's the worrying thing, It won't take 70 years, it'll take 10 years, tops. And it won't be youngsters, it'll be me
