So... how canon are they? I am interested in this game now.

Like, on a scale between "best buds with maybe one throwaway cute line for the yaoi fans" and "they buttfucked on screen", are we at Ike/Soren level of canon?

Yeah... I hate to doubt OP but I kinda doubt OP. I'm interested in the game but, how canon? Is the OP spot on and it's canon or are they just teasing a gay ship?

(Anonymous) 2015-11-12 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
If they're as canon as most "official" het Tales couples, the most that's going to happen is that they rest of the party ships them while the characters themselves do lots of blushing around each other, with some veiled confessions that the speaker immediately denies and says "don't take that the wrong way" about.

Which would be enough for me in the context of a tales game. Because, you know, at least the couples are getting the same treatment.

When I say teasing it, I mean more like... how Jade treats some of the men in Abyss or Zelos from Symphonia.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-12 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
So...no, then. Pass. Wake me when game designers put it in actual text.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-12 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Then you'll be sleeping forever. Otaku don't want gay characters and fujoshi are happy with their subtext, they don't need their pairings to be canon. It's a win/win situation for game designers.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-12 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
You have a dude outright thinking another dude is hot.

That's pretty explicit gayness.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-12 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
They are exactly like Ike/Soren minus the 'one of them had a child with a woman' thing.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-12 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
Awakening canon don't count for shit. It was a clusterfuck of continuity, especially with the multiple worlds and timelines. There's even multiple Ikes as of Awakening canon, so you can't guarantee that Radiant Dawn Ike is even the one Priam is looking for.

OP

(Anonymous) 2015-11-12 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
About this level of canon: http://damenin.tumblr.com/post/109582050158/lookiamnotcreative-soreys-definition-of-hot

But yeah, it's Tales, so it's not super explicit. Tales of Hearts was literally about the (het) romance, and "I love you" was the last line of dialogue in the entire game.

Re: OP

So "best buds with maybe one throwaway cute line for the yaoi fans".

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2015-11-12 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
anon who started thread

...that's pretty gay, man. "one throwaway cute line" would be something like "hey bro, you mean so much to me, I feel really close to you" or something. the line OP posted here is a lot more explicit than that.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2015-11-12 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
But Sorey thinking that Mikleo is hot doesn't mean that they are canon. Sorey blushes at Alisha too and they aren't together.

OP

(Anonymous) 2015-11-12 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Well, there's also the matter of Mikleo being Sorey's "soulmate." And while I can't find it now, I remember there being a skit where they reference "something romantic" going on between them. (People were digging into the original Japanese to figure out what "romantic" was translated from, and it was apparently even gayer.)

But it does make the possibility of him being queer pretty canon. And intentional homoeroticism in the narrative is also worth mentioning in any queer reading.

Re: OP

You're pretty desperate to exclude queer stuff

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2015-11-12 12:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a realist. I ship them and think they are adorable, they are my favorite Tales pairing. But they aren't canon.

I had high expectations but then I played the game and there was nothing. They are without a doubt soulmates, but they aren't the canon couple I was promised.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2015-11-12 03:48 pm (UTC)(link)
There are certain levels of canon, though, aren't there? When we say "canon" we usually mean, did they kiss on screen, confess their feelings in some way, and join together in some kind of sexual/romantic relationship. But there's a difference between "it's purely a fan ship" (with characters who are never seen in any kind of definite sexual/romantic interest in one another) and "they aren't in a canon relationship". If two characters not only show special interest in one another (and they are soul mates, for goodness sake), but there's even suggestion that they are sexually interested in one another? That certainly counts as something, too. Plus, queerness in mainstream media is rarely suggested if it isn't supposed to be somehow meaningful. Subtext not being fully spelled out for you doesn't mean it isn't canon.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-12 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
Even "they buttfucked on screen" isn't enough to make a pairing canon according to some MGS fanboys.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-12 03:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know about that example, but I have noticed that fanboys and the "too cool for slash" fangirls will often deny pretty blatant gayness. Just in Fire Emblem, the Ike/Soren relationship gets denied, but even more hilarious is when they deny Raven/Lucius.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-12 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
So now everyone who disagrees with your interpretation is "too cool for slash"? lmao. Maybe your ships aren't as canon as you think. Lucius pretty much said that he wanted to be Raven's wife. Ike and Soren on the other hand are soulmates, but soulmates doesn't mean that they are in love. Platonic strong friendships do exist, especially in Japanese media.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-14 06:46 am (UTC)(link)
There's a side mission in Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker where you go on an explicitly romantic date on a beach with another guy. It ends with you climbing inside a box together and the box starts shaking around and love hearts come out.

Fanboys claim it's not canon because it's optional.
