Rambutans resemble bright red sea urchins but taste like nectar of the gods.

THIS. They're so good, but I'm spoiled and the canned/frozen ones you get in the States are not the same. :(

The big grocery store in my home town has rambutans, but how do I tell if they're fresh? I suspect they sit around a long time because how many people in the middle of Iowa even know what a rambutan is, besides some of the students at the university?

Then it's unlikely they're fresh, but the way you can tell is by the color. It should be a vibrant cherry red, with spines that are springy and pale green at the tip, NOT dark or with crushed/wilted spines:

Ours look brown and draggled and miserable compared to that. I don't think they can be fresh.

I'm sad that rambutan season is over. The ones I see in the market these days look dismal.

Back in college, I used to buy half a kilo of rambutan from a street vendor on my way home and I usually end up eating them all by evening. When I'm feeling generous, I'd buy a kilo so half of it is mine and the other half would be for the rest of the family. I am a rambutan glutton.
