What if the person turned to drugs because of something in their life that has beaten them down to the point where drugs is the only thing they feel like they have any control over?

DA, but what a ridiculous excuse. Yes, they're still responsible for that. Self-destruction is a decision.

Okay, but usually when people self-destruct aren't in a good state of mind. Yes, it's ultimately their responsibility to improve, no one else can do that for you, but I think a civil society should have easily accessible options, support, and accommodations for those needing help. Punishing them further for making a dumb mistake won't improve anything.

I'm not excusing it. I'm explaining a possible cause. Some people don't see a way out.

Yes, some are permanently self-destructive no matter what but there are those who need to be worked with, to be shown it is possible to have a good or at least functional life beyond needles/pills/powders/etc.

Looking upon a person who needs help as "disgusting" or dismissing or minimizing their situation (calling it a "ridiculous" excuse) is not helpful.
