How does one do holidays when they've basically cut out the family member around whom all holiday stuff revolved?

I don't have a lot of friends and I hate to impose anyway. Part of me just feels like taking a short vacation somewhere but I'm not sure I'll have the funds. Another part of me thought about volunteering somewhere but I'm not sure for what, or if it would just be pathetically self-serving on my part.

I've volunteered before to help with christmas lunches, and a lot of the volunteers were there for the same reason.

If your friends offer and you know their family pretty well, that can be okay too. I usually end up at my friend's house at some point during christmas day. Her mother and grandmother fuss over me and try to make me take all the leftovers home and the kids all want me to help them put together the new toys and play games with them. It can be a little depressing because it's not my family, but I try not to mope.

Other than that, I stock up on comfort food, find a comfy spot, and watch disney movies until life goes back to normal. Vacations around christmas are usually pretty expensive with so many people travelling at once.

Alternately, if you know someone else in your life who also isn't going to be with family for christmas, you could invite them over to hang out. It doesn't have to be christmassy.

I'm not much of a social butterfly, but yeah, I'll keep my options open. I have no problem being by myself on the holiday but I just don't want to be harassed for not being in the company of someone I don't want to be in the company of.

I'll probably look more into the volunteer stuff.

Well in that case, embrace the alone time!

You could...

* create your own holiday, even if it's just a whole day of you-time (which sounds like heaven, quite frankly) where you eat what you want, do what you want, pamper yourself, etc.

* round up any fellow strays you know and do a potluck!

* if you volunteer, there are usually soup kitchen or homeless shelter type Thanksgiving celebrations that might need help. Who cares what your motivation is if there's work that needs doing? Turkey doesn't know you're not being 100% altruistic, it just needs to be sliced and put on a plate for people who need food.

The only issue with the soup kitchen is that I may potentially run into this person I've cut off. I don't have a reason to believe I will, other than the fact that they've always spoken of volunteering at the soup kitchen (note: they never did, but that doesn't mean it won't happen), but I'd like to be somewhere I don't have to worry about it.

I might see if I can relocate to the next town for this purpose though.
