See, I'm really interested in it, but often I'm kind of disappointed. Many of them don't go for real creativity, imo, but have them wear really generic clothes and designs.

Yeah. I see a lot of humanised fan art where it looks like the artist just took a generic character design and slapped a few details or colours from the non-human character on it. They look more like a random generic person who happens to be wearing a costume, than the actual character as a human. I mean, people can draw what they want, and maybe these artists are beginners at character design, and you kinda have to do something badly several times in order to get better at it...

I remember someone actually complaining that some people drew humanised Toothless the dragon as having dark skin... which makes a lot of sense, since he... is very dark as a dragon... and this person was like, you could instead draw him as a pale white dude with straight black hair and dark gothic clothes. And I thought this was kinda ridiculous because it sounded like they just wanted these fan designs to look more boring and less varied...

Yeah, I agree with you.
And it's weird that people would flip out over a dark Toothless O_O I mean I usually find that the colors beg to be copied onto the human version? That's actually one of the reasons why for all that I get 100% why human!Simba should have dark skin, I struggle not to see him with light skin and red hair. Because those are the lion colors...

(it was so smart of MLP to have the human versions of the ponies have the same skin color as the ponies and not march into this mess)

(Yeah. The techicolor pony people sorta mean that they're not really 100% humanised in canon, so completely humanised fan versions can look different, and it's not "wrong".)
