Re: Fairies
The example I liked was a Harry Potter fic that explained faeries as being creatures created from the intersection of emotions and magic. All the different types of faery creatures represent certain types of emotions, and the Seelie/Unseelie courts represent, respectively, Summer and positive emotions, and Winter and negative emotions. In the story Harry was befriended by a brother and sister pair who had a love of food. They turned out to be young Redcaps and the reason for their love of food is that they are based on emotions of going hungry. The Queen of the Winter (Unseelie) Court was a representation of Winter itself.
The example I didn't like, well I didn't see it in person, but heard about it through someone on my LJ friends list. She used to spend time on Second Life and had got involved in an RP group with rigorous rules on character types allowed. The problem that eventually drove her from the group was that a new clique was gaining power and wanted to turn everything really grimdark, with even the Seelie Court being vicious brutally cruel torturers.
The point I took from it is that while the Seelie court is still very capricious, it still has be lighter and nicer than the Unseelie, if you're going to run with the whole two courts concept.
