Text: Context: Episode Six of Forever, "The Frustrating Thing About Psychopaths", aka the Jack the Ripper episode.

When I saw this episode, my reactions went like this;

Before seeing it: "Yes! This is absolutely perfect subject material for this show."

After seeing it: "No, that was not 'exactly like' Jack's killings. If it was, you couldn't have shown it on TV. Besides, he sent a kidney to the police, not a heart, and he did it after his fourth victim, not the fifth, which is the one you're clearly referencing here."

I feel like I took this too seriously...but dang it, this was a fantastic opportunity and they didn't do their research!

I can understand your frustration. If I'm watching or reading something that references something I know a lot about, and it gets some things wrong or changes some details (no matter how minor), I get annoyed, too. I think it's probably normal.

Then again, you and I could just be the same shade of abnormal.

The thing that got me about that episode was why the hell did a room full of cops have to have the ME point out that the murder of a prostitute named Mary Kelly miiight just be referencing, oh, only the most famous serial killer EVER. Like, how is that not the first thought that comes into your head? Call girl. Mary Kelly. Organ removal. Even if the details are wrong and mish-mashed together, this is kind of a no-brainer. You'd think the cops would at least have thought it before the ME has to show up and point it out.

Also? Call girl choosing that name as a street name? Whole lotta tempting fate there, love.

I think this episode was just pretty weak in general, though.

To be fair, that particular cop is often a little dim, but yeah. That's pushing it just a touch.

Stupid question, but why would it be assumed that they know that?

Between the dozens of theories in popular crime about who Jack the Ripper really was (will the real Jack the Ripper please stand up, please stand up), plus the fact that pretty much every cop show ever with serial killers in has had a Jack the Ripper episode, your average joe off the street has a damn good chance of knowing that Jack was never caught, let alone someone who's supposed to be a cop. I mean, barring presidential assassinations, is there any more famous unsolved case in existence?

Because Jack the Ripper is one of the most famous serial killer cases in history. Many would say it's THE most famous, bar none, and the reason why it's so famous is that it's unsolved.

I adore this show to bits but I can never forget that moment. They seemed to enjoy the 'Silly Americans know almost nothing about British culture or history' but anyone that is even interested in crime not knowing about Jack the Ripper was beyond pushing it.

Which is a shame because it was actually an amazing episode, but I'm sorry no.

my girlfriend was screaming the exact same things at the screen. never mind - later episodes were much better.
