it's a big hall in a relatively small tenement, sandwiched between stocky buildings: by the time police and army enter and secure the hall, who knows what happened inside?

It was a hostage situation in a concert hall. That's a nightmare scenario.

yep, they could have detonated a bomb or set fire as well as opening fire
i don't even want to imagine what people trapped in there felt

Not all, obviously, as there were up to 1,500 persons in the theater, but... yes, there was some gunning down there with no way to escape. /shudders
