19. YES GOD. I have wanted to say this for years. *sob* It seems like the part of the fandom that doesn't wet themselves over what a cutie Axel is insists that he's actively a different person in CoM and that KH2 ruined him and I can't stand any of them. XD Both of those groups are made of fail.

Here's an idea: it's called character depth. In CoM, we never saw any of Axel's weaknesses -- because the only people he interacted with were his enemies. In KH2, facing death, he bares his soul to his allies. SHOCK. The vicious Axel who felt betrayed by his best friend and tried to kill him despite Roxas not having any more hostility towards him was absolutely the same Axel who masterminded Castle Oblivion... and so was the guy who was willing to turn Sora into a Heartless if it meant getting Roxas back.

tl;dr -- the short version is, Axel is a consistent character, suck it.

I know of a situation where an Axel in a RP is just DENYING IT EVER HAPPENED, that the KHII characterization is legit, lol Roxas who dumb.

Seriously. He didn't like those people. I don't understand how you can expect these two characterizations to synch up completely when Axel in Game 2 hates everyone he talks to and Axel in Game 3 has just lost the only friend he actually liked. Oh no, liking people is out of character. DIAF.

I suppose one theory is that he's heartless. I mean -- I understand the aggravation, I can understand why character differences in later games can annoy folk. I dislike Advent Children, and that alone shows that the folk behind it are willing to alter characterization to suit their means, rather than because it actually fits the character.

But given that it's probable that KH:CoM was planned with KH:II in mind the entire time, it strikes me as incredibly unlikely that the entire arc of his character was very different. But I speak without knowing anything about development or even having finished KH:II, so what do I know? :/

People who do that are generally biased. They simply can't believe that Axel could/should be a smarmy dick to people THEY like. It's almost as if they have to APPROVE of who Axel can be a "smarmy dick" to. Like, he can be MEEEAN to Vexen, but when it's Zexion, all hell breaks loose and all the sudden Axel is a worthless piece of shit.

Plus, someone who is a truly good friend generally treats other people well(neutral people) and at least cordially. HOWEVER, those other people ARE NOT ENEMIES. Everyone is Castle Oblivion was Axel's enemy. You can't afford to treat enemies well, and Axel is especially aware of that.

Although the irony here is that I used to play a pre-CoM Axel and all the other characters just sort of assumed that my Axel was automatically woobie for Roxas, like by definition, long before Axel even had any interest in the short standoffish kid.

I was tempted to have him run off with Luxord just out of spite.

Okay, I wanted to avoid this discussion like whoa, but I'm genuinely curious.

I've seen all the arguments as to why people think he's the same person in both games. But I've yet to see anyone's rational justification for why he isn't; it's just something that's casually rattled off and a certain amount of people bobblehead their agreement and that's that.

So I'm asking -- what's the basis for this one? Because I freely admit to not getting why this even is up for debate in the first place.

That's an interesting attitude to have, OP. I don't care about your opinion, but when you start saying people "don't get it" when they have different opinions, that's when you start to look stupid.

As a sidenote, I can understand Axel being a woobie for Roxas because Roxas is different from other Nobodies. But the tear was just too fucking much.
