Well -- not to argue, just to present my opinion on it -- I played CoM first and I didn't find KH2 to be weird, but when I went back and played CoM again, I saw a lot of hints from the very beginning that they were talking around Roxas and that Axel was doing a lot of what he did because of his interest in Roxas. They obviously already knew who Roxas was and what he would become when they made CoM.

I just think they made it too subtle, because they were keeping Roxas and Roxas's nature such a secret. XD No one ever mentioned him by name, and Axel never really gave a direct clue to why he sabotaged Marluxia's plans, so it looks like Axel and Roxas's relationship came out of nowhere in KH2. So it's more like, in Advent Children I, Cloud muses to himself about a fate that's befallen the Turks, like, "But what about...?" and then never finishes his sentence because LOL MYSTERY RENO AND CLOUD WERE ACTUALLY CHILDHOOD FRIENDS.

I've heard people say that they retconned Re:CoM to give Axel a motivation he didn't originally have, and he was just doing what he did there for lulz (yeah, right), but ever since I've known about Roxas, I've been under the impression that Axel did what he did in Castle Oblivion partly because of Roxas.

I do appreciate your opinion on it, though, honestly, because you're right -- it's true that we're expected to buy an extremely deep friendship with only the very, very subtlest of hints that it ever existed until it's already over.

Anyway, they're putting out plenty of prequels that will hopefully explore that a little? >_> It's just a little too late for some fans. XD

Good god, if they did this, I wouldn't buy that either.

And I'm not saying you should, but I am saying it was there in CoM, no matter how, uh, flimsy.

(P.S.: I also want to note that there's a difference between "That friendship came out of nowhere!" and "That guy is OOC! I'm going to pretend he's a totally different character!" I don't mind if you feel like the relationship came out of nowhere, but to cry about how there must be two separate Axels because one of them has a friend he cares about is just ridiculous. XD Axel was very character-consistent when he wasn't brooding and/or dying. So I don't entirely feel like the objection and the secret are along the same lines, if that makes sense? Unless I guess you feel like the random acquisition of a friendship made him into a completely different character.)

I think it's equally ridiculous to insist that Axel in KHII makes perfect sense as it is to insist that there are two separate Axels (what did happen to the other one, by the way?).

I'm sticking with "creators failed to write whatever-the-hell-it-was well"
