I pay for a crunchyroll subscription and I'm happy to, especially as it means I can get 720p videos :)

OT: She's cute. What pirate anime is she from?

(Anonymous) 2015-11-15 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
She's not from anything, just an original character by an artist named Shunya Yamashita.

If you really want to support the industry your best bet is buying BDs of shows you like directly. Subscriptions don't do all that for the companies actually making it.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-14 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Apparently Japanese companies ignore overseas sales so even if you buy the BDs they won't be added to the total numbers.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-14 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
The money still go towards supporting the company, but you're right that Oricon doesn't count oversea sales in total sales. But you should still buy the Japanese DVD/BDs (or related merchandise) if you want to directly support an anime.

Read 3.1 (and the rest of it honestly) and it'll explain better than I can: http://www.someanithing.com/sales-faqguide

If I bought Japanese BDs of shows I liked I would not be able to afford anything else, hobby wise. The prices are nuts.

(I do buy merchandise though)

(Anonymous) 2015-11-15 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the prices are steep but the industry's dependent on them since the hobby's relatively niche. Merchandise works as long as it's first hand and official, though.

I try to go for shows that aren't doing all that well, but I enjoyed.

Yeah, I'm a big figure collector especially. I occasionally buy doujinshi or fanart prints, but 95% of merchandise I have is official.

Re: BD- Not to mention if it doesn't have English subs, it's useless to me. There's a couple of shows that weren't released over here that I'd absolutely be willing to buy Japanese BDs for, but with no English sub options, it's basically me throwing money down a hole.

I buy DVDs and, recently, blue ray.

I think this is the safest sign that I'm officially and old lady.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-14 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
nah it's spelling it "blue ray" that makes you an old lady :P

No need to tell me *g* I realised it when I couldn't for the life of mine figure out what the plural form was (blue rays? eugh)

(Anonymous) 2015-11-14 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
blu rays

Blu-rays or BDs (blu-ray discs).

I've only used Hulu a handful of times and I'm way behind on anime and don't watch enough of it to justify a subscription. When I do catch up I'll just have to sit through 12 commercials every 30 minute episode. :(

Yes. Because Hulu was just watching and waiting for you to leave so they could unroll ad-free viewing. Just to spite you.

A subscription to crunchyroll and a 4.99 (ad-free) subtitle only subscription to funimation should get you 95% of the shows being simulcast. Hulu doesn't offer much of anything that isn't on those sites.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-15 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I think Chivalry of a Failed Knight is one of their first simulcast exclusives. Pretty much everything they get is either on Funimation or Daisuki.

I mostly use my Hulu subscription for older anime shows.

Delicious, sweet HD blue-ray quality. You cannot resist it.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-15 01:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh no, I didn't like the service so I stopped paying, but now they're offering what I want, so I... won't pay... some more..? That doesn't make sense.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-15 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
They're bitter that they were paying with no noticeable anything, then when they stopped they finally offered the services most people WOULD pay for.
