aftermath of the Paris shootings

(Anonymous) 2015-11-14 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I spent last night worried sick about my family but still held it together. I count my blessings as none in my family and friends were killed or injured. I thought we would be safe. That we could face the times of hardship to come together.

And THEN I see that message on Facebook where on of my own cousins spews so much hate and demands that the governement execute islamist prisoners in retaliation. I just broke down crying. I can't believe it. I just can't. This can't be happening. Not in MY family.

I can't believe it's happening. I know there are hateful, despicable people in this country. I know anger and fear mae people say atrocious, hurtful things. That we need to see past them and past the differences and stick together. That we NEED to all stick together. And if I can't trust my own family who will I trust now??

Did you see what is said about Paris when they claimed the attacks? Maybe, put down the pitchforks, and understand that this is normal to feel angry towards the people who are murdering fellow countrymen and threatening to do it again. Which, you know, would include your cousin and your family.

Murder and retaliation are never a solution.

Sometimes they are.

If someone's molesting my kid, I can and will beat them to death. No regrets.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-15 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Would you beat to death people you deemed similar to the person committing the crime?

Oh shit sorry, I completely misread OP's comment. Please disregard mine. I'm so sorry

I said nothing about murder or retaliation. Staying stupid shit on facebook isn't going to suddenly make all the Islamist prisoners burst into flames. Their cousin venting on facebook out of anger is not the end of the world. Maybe put it in a little perspective.

Thank you for speaking sense!

I'm sorry. People who are scared and who've had their whole world turned upside down often say and do really, really stupid, hurtful things. I hope your cousin realizes that's fear talking and not common sense.

Most of his friends are agreeing with him and he's relentlessly mocking the one who tried to hav him calm down a bit and rethink.

Mob groupthink is ugly, and can lead to ugly things. It probably won't calm your cousin down any, but this is precisely the sort of thinking that drives groups like ISIS... violently lashing out in retribution at everyone, a cycle that feeds into itself.

Hence why I am so hurt and scared.

Re: aftermath of the Paris shootings

(Anonymous) 2015-11-14 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Perfectly normal. If you're up to it, you could try responses like "You're a better person than this" or "This level of violence isn't like the person I know". People are capable of some pretty terrible things if all they ever hear are reinforcements of their own awful thoughts. Being the voice of reason isn't easy, but you might reach someone.

I'm glad your family is okay. This sort of think sadly brings out the worst in people. My own parents have started radicalizing a while ago already, and i had and ex-classmate advocate using nuclear weapons. Insanity reigns :(

Thank you. I'm sorry about your parents and I hope your country won't be targeted again or caught in the crossfire when shit keeps happening next door.
