anon with the fascist-inclined cousin from yesterday

(Anonymous) 2015-11-15 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)

I'm not going to disown him. Yes, that was my knee-jerk reaction yesterday, and that was some advice I was given and I almost did it. But no, I won't.

I hate what he's saiying, I never liked him much in the first place and I despise what he's become. I won't spout sentimental bullshit about family. But I won't stick my head in the sand myself either.
I cannot make him change his mind righ now. He insulted his friends' and his own sister's intelligence when they tried, he's not going to listen to me. I can't him to just shut the fuck up.

I have to acknowledge that as hurtful and frightening it is that people go on spewing that bullshit and believe it, it's happening for a reason and even if I don't know how exactly I can fight it, I'll have to try. In the meantime, as they say: keep your friends close, and your enemies closer.
I won't cut him out, I prefer to keep an eye on him. Just in case. It will hurt, it will be hard, it will make family reunions awful, but better the devil you know that the one you don't.

Thanks, everyone who gave advice and support. No thanks, trolls. Keep going, FS.

I think that's a sensible choice. The whole "disown him" comment was really knee jerk and I'm not even sure it was a serious suggestion, but yeah, sometimes life isn't that simple.

I was the anon who made that comment and it wasn't.

Okay, this is 100% your decision and I respect it, but I do not understand the reasoning. It will hurt to keep in contact with your cousin, and yet you will keep in contact with him because... what? What could happen if you don't? He'll join Ku Klux Klan?..

nayrt

Maybe it depends on how close your family is, but disowning someone and cutting off contact because of differing political opinions isn't easy for everyone, you know. I'm not as close to my cousins, but if it were say, my brother who was spewing that nonsense... well, he's still my brother and I love him, even if he's being a dickhead. Naturally, I;d try to reason with him and I'd have hopes that he'd come to his senses eventually. But I don't want to lose a sibling just because of an opinion.

That's very true, but OP specifically said that they don't really like their cousin anyway.

NAYRT - Yeah, but at the very least they may have family members that they are close with, who are also close with this cousin. That would make family gatherings rather difficult.

True, but her shitheel of a cousin doesn't exist in a vacuum. There might be aunts, uncles, other cousins, etc. to complicate matters when it comes to cutting contact.

Because I don't lose hope that I can find a way to discuss the core of the problem with him and, even if I can't change his mind, help calm him down.
Because if he doesn't calm down and start doing really hurtful things he will brag about it and I can't get him nailed for it. It's petty but hey, his loss.
Because I want to help my other cousins, his brother and sister, whom he's giving hell to, and for that I need to know what's happening.
And maybe because, he's baiting people who disagree with him to just cut him out so he can whine about stupid people not liking him and make us who advocate understanding and tolerance hypocrites, and I want to prove that I'm smarter than him and I won't fall for his shit.

I don't if it makes sense, but it's late and it's been two very tiring last nights and days.

Oh, okay. No, these are actually valid reasons - well, the third one in particular. Thanks for explaining!

Those are all valid reasons because it's your life and your decision.

You are not alone when it comes to having obnoxious family members. I find wine to be a great help when it comes to family reunions. My mother has basically stockpiled gobs of the stuff for Christmas this year.

...I agree with this. Last year, using Bailey's, Pendleton whiskey, or Godiva chocolate liqueur in my tea was my mainstay for it.

Though this year I can't rely on wine (recent health issues), so I'm going to deal with it through "frequent ditching to go to the bathroom and playing my feel-good 3DS games--AKA Tomodachi Life, Animal Crossing New Leaf, or Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer."
