For me, the problem was that jack Sparrow is just not a character who can hold a movie on his own. He was best in the first movie. As he gradually took more and more of the spotlight his shtick got more and more annoying and the movies got worse and worse.

Eh, I like how he balances with Barbossa far more than Will and Elizabeth, because I'm forever bitter he took a backseat for a romance of all things and not something actually piratey.
