I agree with you. Remember those stupid "character sheets" that people were encouraged to create back in the day? As if knowing your character's favorite vegetable made a particle of difference to anything!

That's an extreme example but the whole point of that was to encourage writers to know their characters inside and out, as if they were real people. It helps with characterization. I can't tell you how many disappointing stories I've read where the characters didn't seem to have any depth at all, or they were just clumsy masks worn by the author because they all sounded the same.

So a detail like knowing their favorite vegetable might be silly, but that mindset is a good idea if you want to create well rounded characters who don't look and sound like every other character you write.
