Apologize for missing the appointment, make a new appointment, and go to it. While at that appointment, just ask if you will be able to reduce the frequency of the visits eventually.

I needed a follow-up appointment when I started high blood pressure medication to make sure everything was going okay. That's just how it works a lot of the time when you start a new medication/treatment that will be on-going or long-term. Even birth control might require a follow-up if you're taking it to correct a problem rather than just for contraception. I know nothing about this medication, but I don't think it's horribly unfair to need regular checkups at first.
