Fantasy is probably the least creative genre at this point and that's just sad.

I wonder what could be done to shake it up though? Surely it can't all be knight and elves and dragons?

NAYRT

Try Stephen King's Dark Tower series. Most creative fantasy I've ever read (which admittedly is not saying much).

AYRT

I'll look into it! Thank you :)

The worst part is that you can literally do anything with fantasy and yet people go back to the same old medieval land.

tbh that's exactly the stuff I like though. Doesn't mean each plot has to be the same, but I love high fantasy and I want more of it.

I wish there were more fantasy lands that are largely original, or take their cues from old and ancient cultures that aren't medieval Europe. Just look at A:TLA - fantasy set in an East Asian-inspired world, and it was great fun.

Same anon - also, if a fantasy book summary is something along the lines of "Rowan/Asher/Delan spent his whole life in the countryside/small town, only to discover one day some magical blablabla that puts him at the center of political intrigue and ancient conspiracies... oh and btw there's some secret about his real parents and a connection to the Dark Lord; did I mention the tough-but-feminine babe he meets?', I don't bother with it unless it's been recced by someone I trust.

It's easy to shake it up. In fact, fantasy is a very diverse and original genre.

The problem is that fantasy fans only read the boring, dull, unoriginal shit.
