Interesting. I can't say as I've ever read any royalty AU... what sort of royalty are we talking here, real countries or fantasy kingdoms?

I can think of a couple I've read offhand - one was a fantasy kingdom with Mass Effect characters, and a couple of Hobbit Modern AUs with a fictional countries in the Real World. The latter however were more modern retellings of The Hobbit, usually with Thorin and others driven out of their kingdom by a person or terrorist group with the name "Smaug" somehow coming up.
